See what we are doing this yearr! FKE Activities Highlights 2015-2016
Open House – In August, 2015, families gathered before the start of school for students to meet their teacher and see their classroom on 2 nights, one for K-2nd and one for 3rd-4th grades. The PTO served free ice cream at these events! In addition, the PTO handed out important school year calendars, information about ways to be involved as a volunteer at FKE, and offered a chance to contribute to FKE PTO’s Fall Fund Drive – the PTO’s main fundraiser – which supports all the PTO’s great programs for students throughout the year. Parents were also able to buy some necessary school supply items, such as planners and blue folders, and FKE sportswear and spirit items, like t-shirts and water bottles.
Family Nights – The PTO sponsors a Family Night throughout the year for students and families to participate in exciting activities . Our Scholastic Book Fair was open for families to buy great new books and we had FKE sportswear available for sale. Families were also able to buy Kroger gift cards, which is one of our easy fundraisers in which Kroger gives FKE a 4% rebate on all purchases. Other family nights are held throughout the year.
Learn At Every Turn – On October 30, 2015, we held our annual LAET day. This amazing day-long experience features an opportunity for all students to rotate through 5-6 min-classes on a wide-range of topics from art, music and drama to sports, careers and fun hobbies. The PTO is very appreciative of all the time donated by our dozens of volunteer instructors from the community who came to school to teach our students all about their skill, craft or job! This is also a great opportunity for parents to come in and spend a day with their student by chaperoning a class.
Book Fairs — We plan 2 Scholastic Book Fairs each year, with the fall fair, held September 14-18, 2015 turning out to be a huge success for our PTO! Each child got a chance to visit the book fair with their class during library time and parents were invited to attend with their student. The gym was transformed into a book store with great books offered at low cost. This is a great way for FKE to earn money from Scholastic to purchase more books and other supplies for FKE! Our second Book Fair of the year will take place on April 18-22, 2016.
Speech Contest – Each year in November, all FKE students in grades 2-4 participate in the Speech Contest, learning how to prepare and give speeches in public. Students choose from 5 different categories: Storytelling, Original Oratory, Broadcasting, Demonstration and Published Literature. All students give their speech to their class during the school day. Students in grades 3-4 have their speeches evaluated by judges, with the top students in each category from each class moving to a final round competition. After a few additional weeks of practice, participants in the final round present their speeches at night to judges from the community who have experience in public speaking. Parents and families have a great time coming to watch their students participate in this great event. Awards are given at Family Friday.
Service Projects – Students at FKE are encouraged to participate in helping others in their community. The PTO organized the Secret Angel Wish List in December, 2015 which listed the clothing needs and toy wishes of angels. Families were invited to choose one or more gifts off the wish list that they could purchase, wrap and bring to school to be distributed to the angels before the holidays. The students also have an opportunity to bring in food to help needy families by participating in the Canned Food Drive sponsored by the FKE Student Council in November, 2015. These opportunities are a great way to teach kids the importance of helping others!
Family Movie Night – On February 21, 2014, we had over a hundred students and their family members join us in watching the Disney movie ‘Super Buddies’ in our 2 theatres – the gym and library. Families brought the blankets and folding chairs and enjoyed a fun evening together while snacking on free popcorn and candy provided by the PTO. Some of our lucky students went home with free books and water bottles that they won as door prizes in our drawing!
Science Fair – Every spring, FKE hosts the Science Fair in which students in grades K-4 are encouraged to formulate hypotheses on a scientific topic of interest to them, perform experiments, develop conclusions and present their results on an exhibit board. Participation is optional for younger grades, but 4th graders are required to prepare a project. Students then bring their project to school on one of the 2 Science Fair days, as designated by their grade, and present the project to their class. This year the Science Fair took place on April 7 and 8, 2014. The presentations are judged by teachers. 3rd and 4th graders also prepare written abstracts which summarize their project which also contribute to their overall score. The project exhibits are then judged by volunteers in the community who have science education and work experience. Winners are tabulated and awards are presented to students at an evening awards ceremony, this year was scheduled for April 9, 2014. 1st place winners from each grade are invited to send their projects to the NAFC Science Fair Exhibition.
Special Persons Day – This special week allows each student to invite a parent, grandparent or other ‘special person’ in to school during their library time to visit the Book Fair with them, eat cookies, get a special commemorative photo together and just enjoy seeing their student during the school day. It’s a fun time for everyone involved! Special Persons Week will take place on April 18-22, 2016.
In addition to these special events, FKE students participated in several assemblies throughout the year. The students also have fun celebrating at winter holiday class parties, the Winter Social for 3-4th graders, Valentine’s Day parties, the Spring Fling, Field Day and other special events in their individual classes.
The FKE PTO is proud to assist the school in bringing these fun and educational events to life for our students to enjoy and experience new things and challenge themselves in ways that they may not have done previously. We always need parent volunteers, so sign up for our PTO emails using the link to the left and learn about ways you can plug in to the PTO and help with these events!
